Press coverage can interfere with personality rights in many different ways, although the most common infringements concern issues of privacy or libel. The exact determination of the level of protection to be afforded to the subject of the reporting has to be recognised as a complex and demanding challenge, given that courts are obliged to balance the interests of the person with the rights of information and freedom of expression. This publication contains an fascinating presentation of the relevant legal situation in 11 different countries, which reveals the different levels of legal protection deriving from varying social and cultural traditions. Furthermore a journalist, a lawyer and a former Supreme Court judge contribute their respective viewpoints. While the country reports concentrate on issues of civil law, general reports deal with European, Constitutional and criminal law. The work includes a comparative analysis and general conclusions.
